Academic excellence, concern for the community, and the expansion of educational opportunity are all part and parcel of the mission of Sarah Lawrence College, and growing sustainably is integral to advancing those values and aspirations. To do this, the College is expanding its offerings by capitalizing on existing strengths and forging collaborations between graduate and undergraduate programs. These collaborations are poised to open up new vistas for current students and to provide attractive options for new applicants considering the College.

Making it Personal

Kathy Yeu P’15, a professional coach and personal branding expert, typically works with top executives and creatives to help them define themselves and their products. Recently she also has been helping her daughter, Michelle Nigro ’15, and her friends navigate the tricky straits of their nascent careers, and as a Sarah Lawrence College parent and donor, it occurred to her that there likely were SLC students who could also benefit from her skills.

Building Bridges

In an innovative move that will admit talented students from regional community colleges to Sarah Lawrence, the College has established the Sarah Lawrence Bridges program. The program, which includes partnerships with Westchester Community College and Bronx Community College, guarantees full funding of tuition and fees for two students from each community college to earn a bachelor’s degree at SLC. The first four transfer students began their studies at the College last fall.

The Sarah Lawrence College community mourns the death of Joan H. Marks ’51. In 1972, Joan took the helm of what, at the time, was a three-year-old genetic counseling graduate program at Sarah Lawrence—the first in the nation. During her 26 year tenure, she would grow the program to the largest in the nation and blaze the trail for an entirely new field in healthcare, blending the tenets of psychology, advocacy, biology, and medicine in a manner that truly embodied Sarah Lawrence's philosophy of education.

Melissa Frazier, associate dean of the College, leveraged Sarah Lawrence’s remarkable intellectual resources and nimbleness to organize a five-week mini-semester for incoming first-year students. From July 6 to August 7, incoming students had the opportunity to take one or two special courses—remotely, for academic credit, and at no additional cost—taught by SLC’s outstanding faculty.

President Judd Celebrates Opening Weeks of Classes and Largest Programmatic Grant in School History in September Newsletter

It’s hard to believe we are already in the third week of classes! On August 31, a perfect late-summer day, we welcomed the class of 2023 and their families to campus. Many thanks to all who prepared in advance and worked throughout the day to ensure one of our smoothest-ever move-ins. For a sense of the weekend,see the great recap videothat film student Harrison O’Clair ’20 created for us. The following days, which saw returning students arrive on campus, were filled with meetings with dons and faculty members to craft trajectories for the year ahead. Of course, this serious work was punctuated with plenty of orientation week fun, such as the annual screening ofThe Princess Bride.

Earlier this week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the Administration is lowering the cap on refugee admissions to the United States to 30,000 individuals per year, the lowest number since the U.S. Refugee Admission Program was established in 1980, when the cap was 231,000. Against this backdrop, I wanted to share news of several initiatives underway at Sarah Lawrence related to issues of immigration and immigration policy.

Sarah Lawrence College Repurposes Trees for The Barbara Walters Campus Center

In preparation for the construction of芭芭拉·沃尔特斯Campus Center, a number of existing trees needed to be removed from the project site. The decision to remove these trees was not taken lightly. Throughout all the discussions around tree removal and preservation, a key priority was the repurposing of as much wood as possible, ideally for the furniture needs of the new campus center.
